According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Thailand, Chota Trachu, the decision is due to the worsening situation in the tourism sector in mid-2019. The main reason for the slowdown in the tourism sector is the strengthening of the national currency against the US dollar. The flow of tourists from China has especially decreased - by 3 percent over the past few months.
The introduction of the tourist tax was scheduled for the end of 2019 - the beginning of 2020. Estimated rate - 4-5 dollars per person.
